On November 21, 2011 Sidney Crosby returned to the ice and I was lucky enough to be there to photograph his comeback. The Consol Energy Center was a buzz with over 250 media (photographers and writers) requesting credentials. As a regular NHL season photographer, I was already in. Whew!
I had several "types" of photos in mind that I hoped to capture. The first was Sid coming out of the runway and stepping onto the ice. I would have loved to photograph this from ice level, but I don't have that kind of access -- only the team photographers can do that. So I went above and shot from the stands.
Next I headed to the ice level Zamboni entrance to capture some shots during warm ups. Then, wait with great anticipation for the game to begin. During players introductions the crew at the Consol run random spotlights on the players. I really like capturing these images with the player in the spotlight. This was the next shot on my wish list to capture of Sidney.
Finally the game begins! It doesn't take long for Sid to score a goal - just a little over 5 minutes. The place goes crazy and the fans cheer holding their "SID" signs. Add that to the wish list, a Crosby goal. Unfortunately, I didn't get the actual goal photo since it was at the other end of the ice. I did get Sid at the bench with the fans holding the signs in the background.
Next on the list, general action photos of Sid. Oh, and maybe someone else in the game! We joked in photo room, half way through the game about finally submitting the first pic of another player.
It was great night at the Consol and while I didn't get all the shots I wanted I think it was still a successful night. One of my shots made on ESPN.com, hopefully more will follow.
Sid finished the game with four points - two goals and two assists. He was named the number one star of game. The final photo on the wish list.
